MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

(Spanish)

"One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way."
Frank Smith

At Seven Stars Primary school we believe in the importance of a high quality MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) curriculum which will open a door for all pupils into an appreciation and understanding of the many and varied cultures and languages around the world with a specific focus at Key Stage 2 on Spanish.

We want to open a door of opportunity for children to explore and develop communication and understanding within and across cultures. We believe this will help children develop skills that will open further opportunities later in life and will bring an aspiration beyond their local area and bring a richness to, and understanding of, their increasingly diverse local area. We provide a practical, real-life curriculum that has a balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at Key Stage 3.

INTENT

To ‘open doors’ for all our pupils to become familiar with and fluent in a Modern Foreign Language (Spanish) through:

Door 1 (Key Skills)

reading and writing in Spanish (with a focus on grammar and phonics)

reading (research) and writing (information) about Spanish culture, traditions and life

Door 2 (The World)

celebrating Spanish culture including food and traditions (and being aware of the culture and language of other people groups – especially those in our own school)

identifying where Spain is in relation to the rest of the world (and identifying key landmarks, places of interest, cities and notable features of place)

being familiar with notable figures and periods in Spanish history

Door 3 (Healthy lives)

developing Spanish conversational skills to support healthy relationships

Building the confidence that comes from knowing another language

                                                                                                                           Door 4 (Creativity)

Exploring, responding to and celebrating Spanish ‘high culture’ (e.g. Spanish music, art, architecture)

Using Spanish culture as an influence on their own artistic expressions

                                                                                                                                                      Door 5 (Communication)

Developing an ability to communicate (speak and listen) effectively in another language

Developing a love for learning new words in Spanish and increasing vocabulary

Our intention is for children to:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of sources
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in Spanish for various purposes
  • Develop a love for communicating in a language other than English and a fascination with other cultures that will last throughout their lives
  • Look beyond their own culture and language to appreciate other ways of life, customs and beliefs embedding our school values of tolerance, kindness, empathy and respect

Over this academic year Miss Fletcher (who is a very experienced Spanish teacher recently employed at our school) will be delivering Spanish lessons to Years 3 to 6 on a weekly basis and running a Year 2 after-school Spanish club.

Teachers and staff will build on the lessons taught by Miss Fletcher throughout the week.
